Renowned for its beautiful beaches and waves from the Atlantic Ocean that create excellent surfing conditions, Newquay is a popular tourist destination. Nestling on the coast of Cornwall, in south-west England, the seaside town is popular for family holidays and surfers alike.

Its sandy Watergate Bay and Fistral beaches are major attractions, while the famous Blue Reef Aquarium, located on the promenade, has a unique underwater tunnel that passes through a coral-reef tank, giving visitors the chance to get up close and personal with sharks, pufferfish and rays.

Boardmasters

Extreme sports festival

Newquay is also home to the annual Boardmasters event, which is a sports and music festival that mixes surfing, skating, BMX biking and wellbeing activities with live music. Every August, thousands of extreme sports fans and music-lovers descend on Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay for the festival.

There are plenty of activities, apart from the surfing and BMX contests. If you fancy trying out some wellbeing sessions, there will be beach yoga, disco aerobics and even paint fights if you’re feeling more energetic.

The event is a competition first and a music festival second, as it attracts a number of professional sportsmen and sportswomen, who travel from across the UK and beyond to take part. After the day’s sporting and other activities have ended, there’s a chance to chill out and listen to the live bands.

Live music

This year, Boardmasters takes place from August 8th to 12th, with a line-up that features DJs playing live sets of house, electronic and indie music, plus live bands.

Headliners include The Chemical Brothers, Annie Mac and Craig David’s TS5 – a show that combines old skool anthems with other genres including R&B, swing, garage, current house hits and just about everything else, accompanied by Craig David singing and acting as MC.

Other artists performing this year include George Ezra, Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Amazons, The Horrors, Tom Walker, Declan McKenna, Sam Fender and DJ Bicep. As one of the UK’s top beauty spots, Newquay’s golden beaches will host the main area, skate parks, the campsite, pop-up stages and art exhibitions.

Shopping

It’s a great opportunity to go shopping at the Fistral Surf Village, where you will find everything from the latest surf apparel, to hand-made jewellery, craft items and more.

There will also be a traditional Cornish market, with a myriad of stalls offering the finest local artisan produce.

Dining

The festival will showcase a multitude of food and drink stalls, with more than 100 vendors spanning across Watergate Bay and Fistral beach.

There will be something for all tastes, including the Wild Oyster fine-dining experience and premium street food from Surf and Turf. Steak and squid, “posh” kebabs, gourmet mac and cheese and other delicacies will be on the menu.

Sample classic Cornish pasties, local food from the Cornish market and a Wellness Café full of healthy tasty treats. You can also try a cocktail or two along the way!
